Creating Tables In Microsoft Word 2013 : Insert Table Method

As computer users, we would have come across different types of tables containing information or data. Well without wasting much time, we would see how we can create tables in Microsoft  Office Word 2013.
Before we continue, one thing should be clear. In Microsoft Office 2013, a table can be created in two ways which are by inserting a table and by drawing a table. In this post, we shall be looking at how to create a table using the "insert table method". To learn this technique, we will create an imaginary table of a soccer league in one of the most popular cities in the world London. The table we are trying to draw is shown below.

We will attempt to draw the table above. So let us kick off the drawing exercise.
Disclaimer: Please the table above is purely imaginary. Please it is not meant to defame any soccer club. It is pure coincidence if any of the soccer clubs listed in the table actually exists.

After opening Micrososoft word, we look for the “INSERT” button and click it

Then after clicking, we get something like this

Then click on table which is close to the upper left part of the window. After clicking, an insert table box will pop out as illustrated below

Now looking at the table, we have ten columns, so the next thing we have to do is to select the ten boxes on the first row in the insert table box. We d this by first selecting the first box on the uppermost side on the left.

Then gradually drag your mouse to  the right to select the second box.

Continue this way until you have ten boxes

Now we have one row and 10 columns.
But looking at the table, we have 10 columns and 22 rows, so we have to increase the number of rows. So we proceed to do this by dragging down the mouse to select 10 boxes below.

We keep dragging the mouse down until we get to the bottom

Now, we notice that we have just 8 rows, which is not enough. We have to increase the number of rows. We have 14 rows to add. So we move the cursor to the last row at the bottom of the table. In the picture below, we assume the cursor is in the box painted black.

Then we move to the table tools tab and click on layout

After that, we click on insert below button

Repeat the above step that is click the insert below button 13 times more. We will obtain something like this

Then highlight the first row. We do this by moving the cursor to the first cell on the first row at the left hand side. After this we hold down the shift button and we keep pressing the right button until we get to the end of the first row.

Before we continue, we need to know why we are doing or taking the above step. We are trying to create a blank space for the words “London Top Soccer League”. So by taking the step above, we are only starting the process of creating a blank space in the upper part of our table.
Next, after highlighting, we click on merge cells

This will give us something like

Then we highlight all the cells that is the whole table, go to the layout under table tools and then click on align middle center

Now we can move the cursor to the blank top row and type the header of the table which is London Top Soccer League.

Then we move down to the next row. We fill in all the cells starting from the left. We get to each cell by clicking the right arrow button.

Then we move to fill all the data under position to points. Then our table is complete

Tip: Practice drawing all over again. Practice until you are used to the concept. As you keep practicing, you will be developing your individual skills.
